Everyone is born with a brain, but everyone’s brain is uniquely wired.
The brain works like a huge network with each node being a neuron. Electricity and chemicals are firing between neurons non-stop all the time throughout our whole lives. Some connections between certain neurons are strengthened while some get diminished during the firing process.
Think of a big giant tree with branches, some branches get stronger and some get pruned over time. The trees are shaped by the gardener, and our brains are shaped by our experience. The firing process is impacted by the external environment the brain is exposed to. Just like machine learning models, which learn the pattern and correlation between things through the training data. Every machine learning model has its limitations and biases. To migrate that we have to continuously retrain the model with the refreshed and high-quality training data so that the model could have a good prediction power. It’s the same for our brains, which need to be exposed to new and high-quality experiences to keep making the best predictions for our actions.
Our parents may have the most control over our brain’s experience when we were kids. But as we grow up, we start to have more and more control over our brain’s experience and create new experiences for it. The social environment around us is also part of our brain’s experience. It’s our choice to keep updating our brain models by exposing them to high-quality training data through learning new knowledge and putting ourselves around people who can bring positive experiences to our brains. In this way, our brains can work best for our survival.
Understanding this calls for responsibility for the parents, society, and each individual to help create a better family, social, and personal environment to shape the human brain.
